Today was a good riding day. It started out looking pretty stormy, but the rain never materialized. Temps were in the 80s most of the day too, which is about perfect for me. I wanted to try and make 60 miles, but the hotel in Bayou La Batre (they pronounce it “By-luh-ba-tree”) was too tempting. It’s a little mom and pop hotel and is adequate, although higher priced than the 50 buck Super 6 in Pensacola, which was much nicer. It was cool riding the ferry across Mobile Bay. It was about a 30 minute wait and then the ride was 40 minutes, so it gave me and Heyoka a nice rest, although Heyoka’s rando bag looked a little greener than usual after the crossing.
Here’s the pix from today:
This is Vanessa from Quebec. She was riding solo from San Diego! She and a cop who was riding the same route, joined up to ride together. I think he must work undercover, as he didn’t want his picture taken. Both of them were very nice and gave me some good tips and encouragement.
A tree with the Gulf in the background.
These were taken looking out over the Mobile Bay side of the Orange Beach area.
Some colorful beach houses on the Gulf side.
Kind of a crummy shot of the Ft. Morgan historic site.
Sailboat on Mobile Bay.
Here’s some shots looking around the ferry grounds, while we waited on the ferry to arrive.
Zoey and Jack. Rescued pups with some Australian Shepherd mix in them.
Heyoka waiting to board.
I had to hold on to him to keep him from jumping on too soon.
All aboard.
Hoist the jib, swab the decks and keel haul the miscreants.
Lots of oil platforms.
Heyoka trying to get his sea legs.
I’m on the dreaded Gordon Persons Bridge, which turned out not to be so bad after all. If you blow up the photo, you can see the rise of the bridge in the distance. From here, it looked like it was going to be a killer ride up the span.
Down among the reeds and rushes.
And Donna said hi too. And on Mother’s Day!

It looks like you had a good Mother’s day. Glad you kept Heyoka from jumping into the water! That was special that you seen “Donna saying Hi”, I’m sure she’s riding with ya every mile! Wow, looks like yall will be crossing state lines tomorrow already. Safe pedals.
By the way, Bob said the exterminator came. All good there at home.
Thanks for checking on Bob!
What excitement! His first ride on a ferry.
I’ll keep watching for your great pictures.
Hey Bob, thanks!
Heyoka Anne must’ve been soooo excited! I’m glad he didn’t jump off the ferry. It was nice to see that Mom said hi. Nanny said hi today, because I was behind a car whose license plate said AAYLENE. Haha! Love you!
I’ve been looking for an Alene or Nanny sign too.
