New Braunfels to Austin

Yesterday was a pleasant 47 mile ride from New Braunfels to Austin. Farm roads at first and the last 25 miles was on the I-35 frontage road. Mostly no wind, mostly flat and no rain. I’m staying over another night in Austin at a Red Roof Inn Plus. Where I discovered the plus means, “you can stay here, PLUS you can walk somewhere for breakfast”. This is the first budget motel I’ve stayed at that didn’t offer some sort of continental breakfast. Tonight’s rate is 126 bucks. Almost twice what the rate was yesterday. They have a cute little sign in the room that says, “Not WOW’ed by your stay? We’ll make it right.” I called to gripe about the lack of breakfast, expecting a discount or some extra reward points but instead was offered a complimentary package of apologies.

I went downtown to the music scene last night and to a jazz club called the Elephant Room where the Wasabi Grande Big Band was playing. Fifteen or so musicians crammed into a small club, but they were great.

Here’s the map from yesterday and a few photos.

  1. Saturday nights on PBS one of my favorite shows is Austin City Limits. They host some great bands and different kinds of music.

    • Yeah, they were very generous with their apologies. The front desk brought a box of them to my room. It also had OJ & a breakfast bar. So, technically, they had a complimentary breakfast.
