Yesterday, I chilled out and tooled around Del Rio a bit. I found a bike shop with a miracle bike repairman named Jesus. He calls himself Chewy. He worked on it for 30 minutes or so and didn’t want to charge me for it. I gave him a tip and I was on my way. Now Heyoka shifts like a new bike. I did my laundry and shipped 10 lbs. of stuff back home, mostly for the room in my panniers. I was tired of struggling every day to get them closed. I hadn’t used any of the stuff I sent back, so I don’t think I’ll miss it.
Today, I rode from Del Rio to Uvalde. 72.2 miles. The weather forecast was calling for headwinds, but they didn’t materialize, so the ride was nice. Just long, almost 8 hours. I got to Uvalde, checked in to the America’s Best Value. A process that took 30 minutes! Then I walked up to a steak house restaurant and joined their stupid drinking club so I could buy a margarita. I’m now a member of their private club for 3 days (5 bucks), so drinks are on me.
Here’s the map and some pix from yesterday and today.
Yesterday was a good day to rest. The first part of the day was full of thunderstorms and heavy rain.
Here’s Jesus at the bike shop. He said to just call him Chewy. He worked on my shifters and got them working like new.
Started out looking ominous, but it cleared off as I traveled east.
It looks like the ranches have a friendly competition for best looking entrance.
Welcome to Brackettville. I ate lunch at Julie’s Diner. Forgot to get a picture though.
This was my favorite of the ranch entrances.
A row of windmills in the background with a flight of swallows. I think it should be called a gulp of swallows.
Heyoka thinks it’s ok to water ski on the highway since there were no signs prohibiting it.
Some sheep.
Here’s where Bevis lives. I didn’t see any signs for Butthead.
Welcome to Uvalde.
Tomorrow will be a shorter day to Hondo, TX.

I think it’s funny that the bike shops you find want to charge very little or nothing. Makes me wonder about their business model. I look forward to your posts every day – stay safe.
Let me guess, the 10 lbs. of ‘stuff’ you sent home was camping gear? I guess the last night in the desert was enough? can’t say I blame you, I know I wouldn’t want to ‘rest’ on the hard ground after pedaling all day…..but I wouldn’t be pedaling all day either. Haha just kidding bud, enjoy yourself, you deserve it!
No camping gear except an unused tarp. Mostly excess clothes and a pair of shoes and some extra pedals. I kept my heavy cycling jacket, but will send that too once the weather stays warm. I’ve had to wear either that or the rain jacket every day for a week.
This is great Lee.
