I said goodbye to my warm showers hosts, Bill and Dana and took off for Tempe. It was 45 miles but mostly flat, so it was an easy ride. I’m staying in a Days Inn near Arizona State University. Tomorrow I diverge from the Adventure Cycling maps and head toward the flatter route. My first stop is in Casa Grande, AZ. About 55 miles from here.
Here’s the map of today’s ride and you can click on it for details:
It was a hot one today. It hit 95 degrees at one point. Here’s the pix:
Here’s where you can store your cacti when you’re out of town. These guys were all named John Smith and they gave me the directions I needed to find the Arizona Canal Bike Path. There must be a thousand retirement communities, all gorgeous. Didn’t expect to see an amusement park along the bike path, but here it is. More of the bike path. Downtown Tempe behind me.
An odd looking structure. The Phoenix Airport Sky Train The Phoenix and Tempe electric rail. Not sure if these are Azaleas, but that’s what they looked like to me. Very pretty. Tried to catch this duck eating a fish, but he swallowed it just as I clicked. More views from the bike path. The bike path has tunnels underneath the busy roads. Nice, but I’m told you have to watch out for sleeping homeless people. I saw some obviously homeless folks with their grocery carts, but none in the tunnels. One of the canal locks. You can see the two levels of water here.
Here’s Richard from Northern England and Ron from Canada. I waved them down to make sure I hadn’t missed my turn off the bike path. I hadn’t. It’s a long, long bike path. Maybe 25 miles long.
Tomorrow, Casa Grande.
